Painting my Front Door Faux Copper

I'm a nerd and I like spreadsheets. There. I said it. One spreadsheet I made in particular is a listing of DIY projects, supplies, and estimated costs. A big decision was where to start. Which project to do first. I had to make a decision.

I wanted to do something that wouldn't be too expensive but would make a big impact on my little house. So, I decided to paint my front door. Yay! But what color??? Off to Pinterest I went for inspiration. Showing my hubby color after color and door after door. We kept coming back to picture of a beautiful copper door. My existing door is metal and was a dark red. Here is the before pic...

It was dirty and drab and had been an eye sore since we moved here.

After doing the research, I went with Modern Masters Metallic Copper Paint.

I bought the Modern Masters Extender for Rolling which helped make the coats more even and have less overlap lines.

And bought some Krud Kutter Deglosser to clean the door and prepare it for the paint.

Other supplies I used were...

Black exterior paint (a small can)

Grey exterior paint (a small sample jar is plenty)

I took the door off the hinges and set it up on saw horses in my dining room. Usually I would do this outside but I picked a cold and deary day so inside was much better.

I cleaned it thoroughly with the Krud Kutter and an old rag.

I taped off the edges and around the doorknob and lock. I should have removed these, but I am LAZY!

Meanwhile, my sweet hubby taped off the trim around the door and prepped it for the black paint.

I mixed the copper paint with the extender according to the instructions on the extender bottle. Then I got to painting!

1 coat...2 coats...3 coats! With a lot of drying time in between.

Once the 3rd coat was completely dry, I taped off the inset areas for the grey paint. (I know the picture doesn't show it taped off...but I really did. LOL)

2 coats of the grey and this detail really made the door pop.

My sweet hubby painted the trim black for me and it took him about 2 coats to cover it completely.

Once everything was dry, I pulled all the tape off and put the door back on the hinges. I stood back and admired my hard work. I think it turned out beautiful!

I may go back in a few months and put a sealer on the door once the weather gets warmer so the sealer can cure properly. I also want to buy a fancy black doorknob in the future, too.

What color is your front door? Does it need an update?
